This exhibition showcases the magnificent K. Y. Ng Collection of 68 works by the Master of the Water, Pine and Stone Retreat, each exemplifying a perfect fusion of Chinese and western styles. The Master is Hugh Moss, a celebrated collector, dealer and scholar of Chinese works of art who became an ink painter and calligrapher, mostly self-taught but also benefited from his friendship with living artists he has been working with over the decades.
“Apart from being well versed in Chinese art theories and techniques, the Master is also a practitioner. Integrating the best of western and Chinese worlds, his works are refreshing and delightful. A special feature of his paintings is his English inscriptions, which are written as if they are a horizontal form of the Chinese cursive script: the rich, flowing calligraphy is rhythmic and modern, with an air of pleasant splendour,” said K. Y. Ng, curator of this exhibition, a veteran dealer and renowned connoisseur in many aspects of Chinese art and antiques. Also a strong and enthusiastic supporter and promoter of Chinese contemporary ink paintings, K. Y. Ng has organised 10 ink painting exhibitions in Hong Kong, New York in The United States (twice), and Shanghai, Mainland China (twice) since 1990.
The title of this exhibition, Through the Gates of Wonder, originated from the Master’s thoughts on paintings and the scholar’s rocks depicted as gates through which one can reach a state of transcendence. You are cordially invited to go through the 'Gates', immerse in the Master’s art and you might be able to experience spiritual transcendence!
